A person who is not a Japanese national may acquire a Japanese nationality by naturalization. The Minister of Justice shall not permit the naturalization of an alien unless he or she fulfills all of the following 6 conditions: |
Visiting Japan for short period ・Entry without visa ・Obtaining Temporary Visitor's Visa For obtaining visa to enter Japan ・Certificate of Eligibility System ・Study Visa ・Working Visa ・Working holiday visa (Explained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) ・Visa for family of Japanese Permanent resident status Naturalization |

(1) The applicant has domiciled in Japan for five years or more consecutively; (2) He or she must be twenty years of age or more and of full capacity according to the law of his or her native country; (3) His or her behavior and conduct must be good; (4) He or she is able to make an independent living by his or her own property or ability, or those of one's spouse or other relatives with whom one lives; (5) He or she is of no nationality, or the acquisition of Japanese nationality will result in the loss of the foreign nationality; (6) He or she has never attempted or advocated the overthrow of the Constitution of Japan or the Government formed thereunder by means of force or violence, nor has ever organized or been a member of a political party of any organization which attempts or advocates the same. |

The above only applies to general cases for naturalization. However, there are exceptions such as below: |
| Naturalization cases |
| The above conditions may be alleviated for the following if: |
| the applicant (an alien), regardless of his or her intention, is unable to deprive himself or herself of his or her current nationality; and the Minister of Justice finds exceptional circumstances in his or her family relationship with a Japanese nationality; or other circumstances ; |
| the applicant has had a domicile or residence in Japan for three consecutive years or more and is a child of a person who was a Japanese national (excluding a child by adoption) ; |
| the applicant was born in Japan and who has had a domicile or residence in Japan for three consecutive years or more, or has a father or mother (excluding father and mother by adoption) that was born in Japan ; |
| the applicant has had a residence in Japan for ten consecutive years or more ; |
| the applicant is the spouse of a Japanese national, he or she has had a domicile or residence in Japan for three consecutive years or more, and is presently domiciled in Japan ; |
| and other exceptional cases as deemed in the law. |

| Non-Naturalization Cases |
| 1. The applicant may acquire a Japanese nationality by making notification to the Minister of Justice instead of going through naturalization, provided he or she fulfills the following condition : |
| a child (excluding a child who was once a Japanese national) under twenty years of age ; |
| at the time of the child's birth, the father and mother were married, making the child a legitimate child ; |
| in addition at the time of the child's birth the father and mother were Japanese nationals, and are still presently Japanese nationals, (cf. if already deceased, should have been a Japanese national at the time of his or her death). |
2. The applicant may reacquire Japanese nationality under the following cases: |
| the applicant has lost Japanese nationality but is under twenty years of age and has a domicile in Japan |
| the applicant has received a requisition and has lost Japanese nationality and he or she has become aware of the fact that he or she lost Japanese nationality may also make notification to the Minister of Justice. |
